Introduction

Hunger Fighters Uganda (HFU) is a Not-For-Profit, Non-Governmental Organization Initiated In 2008, Pursuing a vision of “A Hunger and Malnutrition Free Uganda”. The Organisation is engaged in the activities of fighting hunger in Uganda with a local, national and global perspective.

HFU is a WFP Cooperating Partners for General Food Assistance in Nakivale - Oruchinga and Kyangwali Refugee settlements in the South- Western part of Uganda, also implementing school feeding project in Kaabong District in Northern Karamoja as well as under Kampala Capital city Authority in the Central Region.

HFU wishes to recruit volunteers to fill the position tenable in the GFA and Livelihood and Resilience Project implementation for the year 2023/24 in NAKIVALE/ORUCHINGA and KYANGWALI refugee settlements in ISINGIRO  and Kikuube Districts respectively in the South Western of Uganda.

Market Support Facilitator (01 POSITION)

Reports to: Resilience and Livelihoods Officer

JOB PURPOSE The Market Support Facilitator's role is to stimulate the evolution of markets in a way that benefits both producers and businesses. The facilitator will work on developing commodity value chains, linking producers with consumers, and establishing connections between private sector actors and other stakeholders. In a community-led approach, the facilitator plays a vital role in all phases: learning about the community, planning to prevent and respond to harms, designing and implementing community actions, and evaluating those actions.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct research to analyze business behavior of refugees and host communities (purchasing habits, trends, and preferences).
  • Design and execute effective marketing campaigns.
  • Participate in coordinating various agro-value chains, including Horticulture, Apiary promotion, Goat rearing, Pig rearing, Rabbit rearing, Cereal farming, Cassava and maize processing, and Animal feed mixing.
  • Engage in tourism and hospitality coordination activities for Baking and catering, Housekeeping international standards, International dishes, Leather and shoe making.
  • Establish and update the Refugee job information network (REJOIN) for potential employers and employees.
  • Organize trainings for marketable products like Soap marketing, Barber skills, Solar technician skills, Motorcycle mechanics, and other SMEs for targeted groups.
  • Liaise graduates to potential employers or for starter capital.
  • Organize regular trainings in Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Financial literacy, Leadership, Team building, Problem Solving, Conflict Management, Customer service, Communication, and Digital literacy/computer skills with the support of the Livelihoods Officer.
  • Create a database of value chain actors including producers, processors, aggregators, transporters, and consumers of agricultural and non-agricultural goods and services.
  • Monitor progress with Marketing Managers and/or Marketing Specialists.
  • Prepare reports by collecting and analyzing sales data for different value chains.
  • Collaborate with the design department to create promotional materials.
  • Develop clear product marketing strategies and educate beneficiaries on proposed business adjustments.
  • Coordinate promotional activities for new products/services.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual forecasts.
  • Participate in drafting project work plans and proposals to support agricultural market development.
  • Attend joint meetings with stakeholders and other CSOs involved in food systems and nutritional security.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports in line with organizational and financing partners' requirements.
  • Assist HFU staff and volunteers engaged in livelihoods programs in executing agricultural market development schemes, extension, farmers training, and demonstrations/trials.
  • Participate in Social Behavioral Change and Communication (SBCC) activities, particularly related to Livelihoods messages.
  • Ensure cost-effective logistics operations.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by management authorities.

Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, and Zero Tolerance to Fraud

  • Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) and zero tolerance to fraud standards within Hunger Fighters Uganda and among beneficiaries served.

Compliance & Ethics

  • Foster a culture of compliance and ethics throughout Hunger Fighters Uganda.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of Hunger Fighters Uganda's and donor compliance and ethics standards as applicable to the position.
  • Carry out work with the highest level of integrity.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience (Technical/Functional)

  • Practical experience in designing and facilitating participative processes for market analysis and local economic development planning.
  • Substantive knowledge of methodologies for gender-sensitive value chain identification and analysis, market analysis, and stakeholder mapping in the agriculture and/or livestock sector.
  • Ability to work with local government, private sector, partners, and community stakeholders, facilitating understanding and building strong working relationships among diverse groups.
  • Experience in designing and delivering capacity-building activities, including training, mentoring, and on-the-job support.
  • Understanding and experience in promoting women’s economic participation and empowerment, especially in refugee and host community contexts.
  • Knowledge and experience in investment planning, including mobilizing private sector investment for local economic development.
  • Experience in writing financial and technical reports, manuals, and communication products.
  • Effective activity and timeline management, ensuring project work quality and timeliness.
  • Skill in team facilitation, collaboration, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, understanding and supporting its needs.
  • Ability to propose innovative solutions and new approaches.

Qualification

  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience (with a Bachelor’s Degree) or 3 years of post-graduate training in rural market development, agriculture, livestock, agribusiness, business development, or a relevant field (added advantage).
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing market analysis and development processes using participatory approaches involving local stakeholders.
  • Experience in raising awareness and capacity building with local government, private sector, and community stakeholders through training, mentoring, and on-the-job support.
  • Experience in promoting and supporting women’s economic participation and empowerment, particularly in refugee and host community contexts.
  • Experience in writing financial and technical reports and monitoring and evaluating development programs.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in both written and spoken English, Kiswahili, Kinyabwisha, and knowledge of any other local languages spoken in the refugee and host communities would be an advantage.
