Introduction

Hunger Fighters Uganda (HFU) is a Not-For-Profit, Non-Governmental Organization Initiated In 2008, Pursuing a vision of “A Hunger and Malnutrition Free Uganda”. The Organisation is engaged in the activities of fighting hunger in Uganda with a local, national and global perspective.

HFU is a WFP Cooperating Partners for General Food Assistance in Nakivale - Oruchinga and Kyangwali Refugee settlements in the South- Western part of Uganda, also implementing school feeding project in Kaabong District in Northern Karamoja as well as under Kampala Capital city Authority in the Central Region.

HFU wishes to recruit volunteers to fill the position tenable in the GFA and Livelihood and Resilience Project implementation for the year 2023/24 in NAKIVALE/ORUCHINGA and KYANGWALI refugee settlements in ISINGIRO  and Kikuube Districts respectively in the South Western of Uganda.

Position: Gender & Protection Assistant (01 POSITION)
Reports to: Gender and Protection Officer

Job Purpose:
Support mainstreaming of gender equality in all livelihood and resilience activities. Provide advice, guidance, and follow-up in relation to protection and gender aspects of the Beneficiary Feedback Mechanism and Targeting. Prepare tools and set up a system allowing regular monitoring and reporting on the project related gender and protection issues.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Incorporate gender perspective in all livelihood and resilience activities.
  • Ensure equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.
  • Participate in Planning & Organizing: Develop clear goals consistent with agreed gender and protection project strategies.
  • Identify priority activities and assignments; adjust priorities as required.
  • Identify and analyze protection issues and trends.
  • Respond to beneficiaries with protection needs, including referrals, case management, and emergencies.
  • Work with women, men, girls, and boys to adapt livelihood activities according to their needs and priorities.
  • Support gender mainstreaming and technical support to the livelihoods project/organization.
  • Ensure gender equity principles are incorporated into policies and activities.
  • Perform threat, risk, and vulnerability assessments to protect beneficiaries.
  • Identify gender differences and underlying causes of gender inequalities.
  • Provide advice and support to ensure gender-sensitive and protection-integrated approaches.
  • Coordinate program implementation with an Age, Gender, and Diversity (AGD) approach.
  • Provide policy guidance and operational support on protection issues.
  • Promote confidence building and conflict resolution.
  • Prepare training materials and provide training on gender and protection mainstreaming.
  • Collaborate with peers, government agencies, and NGOs on gender and protection issues.
  • Ensure M&E tools are gender-sensitive and indicators are developed.
  • Identify protection gaps and concerns faced by beneficiaries.
  • Collaborate with project staff for referrals and follow-ups.
  • Participate in training and reporting on gender and protection issues.
  • Contribute to project resource mobilization.
  • Engage in research tailored to project success.
  • Perform other related tasks as required by the supervisor.

Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, and Zero Tolerance to Fraud:

  • Promote PSEA standards within Hunger Fighters Uganda and among beneficiaries served.

Compliance & Ethics:

  • Promote a culture of compliance and ethics.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of compliance and ethics standards.
  • Work with integrity.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Community Development, or relevant field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in protection/Gender mainstreaming positions in Humanitarian NGOs.
  • Knowledge of gender and protection in humanitarian and resilience settings.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Excellent English, Kinyarwanda, Kinyabwisha, and Swahili language skills (writing and speaking).
  • Good reporting skills.
